Liverpool-based musician Jane Weaver continues to navigate in experimental waters after Fehérlófia, released in 2019. This time she decides to appear with a colorful pop album. We examine the artist’s work of maturity, Flock.
Having appeared on the Manchester music scene with Kill Laura in the 90s, Weaver skillfully enriched her palette, where she added new tones without getting stuck in any genre. Flock spreads all these influences around it with its sound reinforced with dance-pop, psych-pop and synth-pop sounds. However, it should be emphasized that the musical understanding that also influenced Flock goes beyond the boundaries of certain genres and expresses much more. “I was dying to make a pop album” says Weaver, who does not exercise her hand cowardly. With years of experience, she puts her signature under the most powerful work of her discography. We hear Heartlow for the first time in the LP, whose production is full of promising songs. It is impossible not to feel the strong expression of Heartlow, who proceeded from the alternative rock and electronic music channel. The songs on the album are fueled by social issues Weaver came into contact with her songwriting. The Revolution of Super Visions, knitted with danceable rhythms, is the star of the LP. Stages of Phrases, which we listened to after the song built on top of funk dynamics, reflects the hybridized sound of the musician with its retro atmosphere. Modern Reputation must not be missed as well. It is possible to feel time slowing down and hanging in the air while listening to the song. Naming the album, Flock is a satisfying and original song that goes above and beyond with Weaver’s vocal performance. It is possible to catch the traces of the approach that adds differentiation to it in every song of the album. Sunset Dreams is one of the songs that reflect the spirit of the album with its rich composition. Pyramid Schemes reveals its might as it takes us through its multi-layered structure and intense doses of synths. Solarised, which is the closing song, deviates from the album’s route and takes a special place in the artist’s discography. While expressing her thoughts on the LP, she says that, “It is a collection of pop songs that cannot be seen in unity and therefore cannot be restricted. In this process, I let myself go with the flow and I wanted to handle each song separately.” Weaver frees her sound on Flock and expresses herself in the most colorful way possible. Flock is an exquisite modern pop album that brings you together with its own flow. If you haven’t met Jane Weaver yet, it would be a good idea to get to know her with this album.
